[afro-nets] The rights of people living with HIV/AIDS in Republic of Congo

Dear all,

This is to inform you that we’ve just completed, on March 11, a workshop about the rights of women living with HIV/AIDS and their families in Republic of Congo.

The discussions featured included the right to information, privacy issues, and discrimination faced by women at hospitals and at the workplace.

Results from a study on discrimination and stigmatization by the AIDS National Council were presented.

An analysis of the rights of women living with HIV/AIDS (made this year by an effort lead by AZUR Development) was discussed by participants. At the end of 2007, AZUR Development facilitated a civil society working group on these issues. The group is composed of AIDS and human rights organizations.

A diverse background of participants attended the workshop, from AIDS organizations, to the national AIDS Council, treatment centres, human rights organizations, international organizations, Ministry of justice and human rights, and others.

Recommendations were made by participants for the new national AIDS strategy actually being formulated by the AIDS National Council.

Participants called for more action to protect the rights of the people living with HIV/AIDS, especially women and children and the adoption of the proposed law.

All presentations and more information on AIDS and human rights will be posted online soon.

AZUR Development and the Reseau Sida Afrique are also planning a regional training workshop on the many important intersections between HIV/AIDS and human rights for its Francophone members in Africa from 22 to 25 April 2008, in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The workshop participants will come from 12 African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Congo, DRC, Gabon, Djibouti, Ivory Coast, Mali, Togo and Senegal).

More information will be provided on request.
