AFRO-NETS> The XIII International AIDS Conference

The XIII International AIDS Conference
--------------------------------------

9-14 July, 2000
Durban, South Africa
International Convention Centre

This is the International AIDS Conference on the medical calendar and
the largest international medical conference to be hosted in Africa.
Up to 12 000 people from all over the world are expected to attend
the Conference. The participants will include leading scientists and
clinicians, health care workers, public health agencies, People Liv-
ing With AIDS, politicians, AIDS non-governmental organisations
(NGOs), AIDS services organisations (ASOs) and the media.

Since 1985, the International AIDS Conference has taken place regu-
larly and enables participants to take stock of the spread of HIV,
evaluate progress made in the field of medical research, and investi-
gate and resolve many related social issues. Sub-Saharan Africa leads
the world with the largest number of people living with HIV- the
choice of South Africa is therefore welcome, as it will serve to
highlight the crucial need for action and response to the epidemic in
developing countries.

The theme of the Conference is "Break The Silence", referring to the
urgent need to break the silence on issues such as equal access to
treatment and care; improved and ongoing HIV transmission prevention;
governmental and private sector support in terms of providing educa-
tion and resources; human rights; access of appropriate and meaning-
ful information to all sectors and enabling a supportive environment
for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PWA) in society.
