XIII International Conference on AIDS, Durban 2000
--------------------------------------------------

Community Department

We are pleased to inform you that the community department of AIDS 2000
is up and running. There are currently two staff members, Shaun Mellors
(Community Programme Co-ordinator, International) and Beverley Mpho
Motlhabani (Community Programme Co-ordinator, Africa).

The community department adheres to the following guiding principles in
developing our programme:

- making a difference ; ensuring that the community programme is di-
  verse, creative and has meaning in its outreach, content and follow
  up;

- involvement of infected and affected communities; especially in South
  Africa, Southern Africa, Africa and the other regions of the world via
  the community co-organisers and other platforms;

- sustainable and meaningful impact; the work and the aim of the commu-
  nity programme has a sustainable and meaningful impact for infected
  and affected communities in the preparation of the conference, during
  the conference and after the conference.

Under the guidance of the CPC co-chairs (Peter Busse and Clarence Mini)
the Community Programme Committee is well into developing outlines,
programmatic content and various concept sessions.

The community department will be communicating these concepts within
the next couple of weeks for further inputs, ideas and suggestions, as
well as presenting its vision and expected outcomes. In the meantime
please do not hesitate to contact the community department at the AIDS
2000 secretariat in Durban, South Africa.
