Course programme and contents

The course is designed in Modules, each taking about one week and in-
cluding theoretical and practical aspects:

- Introduction
- Antigens and Antibodies
- Immunoprobes
- Special Techniques
- Nucleic acid techniques
- Follow-up

Candidates for this course are expected to have a degree or diploma in
microbiology or a related subject. The language of instruction will be
English.

Closing date for applications: 30 November, 1997

Course fees:

The fee for the whole course is US $ 4,500.00, which includes all teach-
ing and practical class materials, a theory book and a laboratory man-
ual, and a set of micropipettes for use in their laboratories when they
return home. The course fee does not include travel to Harare or the
cost of accommodation.

Interpretation & Quality Control of Laboratory Diagnosis of Infectious

We offer a new short course, targeting laboratory and clinical scien-
tists and technologists, that aims to review and clarify the contribu-
tion laboratory diagnostics can make in a given clinical and epidemiol-
ogical setting. The growing recognition of the need for quality assur-
ance in all areas of health service will also be addressed, with special
attention to quality control systems for laboratory science.

These concepts will be presented using as examples infectious diseases
common in Southern Africa, in particular on sexually transmitted infec-
tions, tuberculosis and malaria.

Course fees:

The course fee is US $ 1,000.00, which covers all lectures and practical
sessions, the course book, transportation between lodgings and course
venue, excursions, as well as lunches, teas and coffee on the course
days.

In addition the participants will need at least US $ 75.00 per day for
lodging and other expenses during the period of their stay in Harare as
well as travel expenses.
