Training of medical doctors in Africa (3)
---------------------------------------

I think developing countries especially African countries should be
wary of the influx of many poorly trained Doctors from other countries
especially Russia and India who are registered to practice medicine
without proper internships or residencies in these countries. Large
number of these doctors are nationals of these African countries who do
not make it to medical schools in their countries and resort to schools
in India, Turkey, Pakistan and mainly Russia.

African countries as much they need doctors should insist on quality
health workers because its not only numbers which matter. This is
illustrated by many unnecessary referrals of patients who would
otherwise be managed at district hospitals just because the doctor was
not for instance able to perform a caesarian section. Strict
internships before registration would not only improve the clinical
skills but also increase their experience in tropical diseases that are
otherwise not common in the countries they trained.
