Training of medical doctors in Africa (7)
-----------------------------------------

Dear Nayak,

I have followed with interest the postings on this subject and not sur-
prised at the similarity of the situations found in many African coun-
tries. There was a time when many of the senior doctors in some parts
of Nigeria were from the Indian continent; many of them also served in
the education sector. But with the economic decline in Nigeria most of
them have relocated to greener pastures. While the quality of a few of
them was suspect, we cannot complain at the services most of them ren-
dered. It is ironic that a significant number of Nigerian doctors and
nurses have also been 'brain drained' into the West. With the departure
of Asian doctors and the continuing exit of Nigerian doctors, the state
of the healthcare system is dire.
