Sell or not to sell pre-treated bed nets?
In my point of view, it depends where you are, if a bednet market is
already there, you have just to promote the insecticide and people
will see the difference. The problem is: are people willing to pay
for the insecticide, even if they perceive the difference? We may
have to look what is happening in Ghana, Gambia, etc. after the effi-
cacy trials and draw a conclusion. In fact we are interested to get
the higher coverage possible under local circumstances.
If the nets are not there and we are promoting the nets and insecti-
cide, the question is: should we postpone people's awareness about
the efficacy of insecticide until they perceive themselves the dif-
ference?
I would sell nets and insecticide and explain to the buyer why we
need to add the insecticide and sell pre-treated nets.
In one project in Mozambique where we are selling pre-treated nets
people see the difference because of the smell. Are there other ways
to make people to perceive the difference?
Let us discuss how fast we can make people understand that the insec-
ticide is very important and therefore they have to come to retreat
their nets or buy treated nets.
