[afro-nets] Two New Tools in the Youth Peer Education Toolkit

Two New Tools in the Youth Peer Education Toolkit
-------------------------------------------------

On behalf of UNFPA and YouthNet, we are proud to announce the
publication of two new tools in the Youth Peer Education Tool-
kit.

"Standards for Peer Education Programs" provides a framework of
essential components for any peer education program, as well as
tips and examples from around the world. It includes a descrip-
tion of 52 recommended standards from five categories (planning,
recruitment and retention, training and supervision, management
and oversight, and monitoring and evaluation). This tool is or-
ganized to be user-friendly for various readers and purposes,
and includes a booklet and a four-page version for managers to
take with them on site visits.

"Theatre-Based Techniques for Youth Peer Education: A Training
Manual" is intended for program managers and youth peer educa-
tors who are interested in adding a theater component to their
reproductive health and HIV prevention activities or in
strengthening a theater component that is already part of a pro-
gram. It contains four peer theater training workshops, a series
of theater games and exercises that can be used in trainings,
and information on developing and building a peer theater pro-
gram.

Both of these tools resulted from a collaboration between the
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Family Health Inter-
national. They were produced for the Youth Peer Education Net-
work (Y-PEER), a project coordinated by UNFPA. To view the Stan-
dards for Peer Education Programs and Theatre-Based Techniques

Y-PEER (Youth Peer Education Network) has worked since 2001 to
increase the capacity of local and national NGOs to implement
high-quality peer education programs promoting HIV risk reduc-
tion behavior among adolescents in Eastern Europe and Central
Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and East Africa. It is co-
ordinated by the United Nations Population Fund, with
FHI/YouthNet, UNAIDS, and other partners.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is an international
development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man
and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA
supports countries in using population data for policies and
programs to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is
wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of
HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and
respect.

YouthNet is a five-year program funded by the U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID) to improve reproductive health
and prevent HIV among young people. The YouthNet team is led by
Family Health International (FHI) and includes CARE USA and RTI
International.
