TITLE: Data Manager/Program Manager
SALARY: Depends on experience and qualifications (approximately ZAR
7,000 - ZAR 10,000/month)
LOCATION: Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa
ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: One year, renewable depending on funding, starting
October 2000

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Provide data management support to ongoing microbicides clinical tri-
als, including receiving and managing case report forms, managing
data entry, and data cleaning. In addition, assist with monitoring of
ongoing microbicides studies and work with other microbicides pro-
jects as needed/appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Organize and manage systems for receiving and documenting receipt
   of case report forms.
2. Develop and manage data entry programs and systems.
3. Develop systems and programs for ensuring accurate data entry, in-
   cluding ongoing data cleaning.
4. Liase with trial sites regarding data management and items from
   case report forms or data entry that require resolution of queries.
5. Assist with development and production of case report forms, as
   needed.
6. Assist with basic data analysis.
7. Liase with Population Council New York staff as necessary regard-
   ing data management and monitoring.
8. Assist with monitoring of microbicides clinical trials.
9. Participate in report writing and proposal writing as necessary.
10.Work with South Africa and other regional and NY Population Coun-
   cil staff on ongoing and new microbicides projects as
   needed/appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. University degree with work experience, or advanced degree, with a
   focus on research.
2. Experience with data management and statistical software, prefera-
   bly including SPSS.
3. Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Word,
   Excel and Powerpoint.
4. Good organizational skills, and ability to work well with people.
5. Good writing skills.
6. Able to work independently.

The candidate should be hard working and self-motivated. An interest
in reproductive health or women s health would be a plus, but is not
necessarily required. The position will involve extensive communica-
tion and interaction with colleagues from a variety of countries,
both within and outside the Council, so the candidate should be able
to work well with people from a variety of backgrounds.

TITLE: Program/Administrative Assistant

SALARY: ZAR 6,000 - ZAR 8,000/month depending on experience and
qualifications
LOCATION: Randburg, Johannesburg, South Africa.
PERIOD OF ASSIGNMENT: One year in the first instance.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Provide program and administrative support for the Population Council
Office in Johannesburg and for Horizons Project activities in South-
ern Africa. Horizons is a five-year (1997-2002) global operations re-
search project designed to identify components of effective HIV/AIDS
programs and policies, test potential solutions to improve preven-
tion, care and support programs and service delivery, disseminate and
utilize findings with a view toward replication and scaling up of
successful interventions. The Population Council directs Horizons un-
der a cooperative agreement with USAID. Horizons is implementing a
number of operations research studies in HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa
and seeks to hire a program/administrative assistant for its office
in Johannesburg

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum qualification: higher diploma in social or health sciences
   or related field.
2. Good background knowledge in HIV/AIDS.
3. Ability to provide assistance for HIV/AIDS research and program
   activities.
4. Computer skills including knowledge of MSWord, Excel and Power-
   Point.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
6. Financial management knowledge.
7. Ability to learn quickly and expand scope of functions.

RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Assist with data collection and analysis activities.
2. Provide input for the development of project reports.
3. Assist with and provide support for monitoring field activities.
4. Assist with the preparation of presentations for conferences and
   meetings.
5. Facilitate timely financial disbursements to projects.
6. Ensure timely submission of financial and program reports by part-
   ners.
7. Source for HIV/AIDS-related materials and publications for office
   and projects.
8. Provide support for Horizons dissemination activities.
9. Assist Office Manager with routine administrative functions such
   as preparation of financial reports, maintaining inventory of office
   equipment, and procuring office materials.
