Vacancy: Research Programme Leader in Malawi

An ambitious and capable scientist with experience in tropical
medicine is sought to assume direction of the Karonga Prevention
Study, a large research programme associated with the London
School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The appointee will be
based mainly in Malawi, as a member of the LSH&TM staff. S/he
will succeed Professor PEM Fine who retires in 2005 or 2006.

There are excellent opportunities both for continuing the pro-
gramme's strong tradition of research on mycobacterial diseases
and HIV and for expanding or developing new research on HIV in-
terventions, phase 2-3 vaccine trials, parasitic disease epide-
miology and control, nutrition, etc.

The programme has been running since 1979, and currently employs
9 senior and 90 support staff. It is based on a 25-acre campus
near Chilumba, in Karonga District, a rural area of northern Ma-

The appointment will be without duration, and at a level of sen-
iority commensurate with previous experience, from Lecturer to
