E-drug: 4th generation cephalosporins
---------------------------------------------
We have a very aggressive medical sales representative who is marketing an
injectable 4th generation cephalosporin Cefepime to be used in surgical
prophylaxis (Dirty surgery) while at the same time referring to it as a
reserve drug for nososcomial (Hospital acquired) infections. I am worried
about this and although they have promised to bring me some clinical papers
to back these claims, I would like to hear some expert opinion on this. My
hospital has approved its use as a reserve drug for infections resistant to
other antibiotics, including hospital acquired ones . By the way, it is very
costly especially in paediatrics where the doses require are small and the
pack strengths available are 1g, 2g. We have another reserve oral 4th
Generation Cephalosporin Cefixime on our formulary
