E-drug: Anti-counterfeiting kit
----------------------------------------------------------

A mini-laboratory to help developing countries detect counterfeit and
substandard medicines will be available from October (Scrip no 2361, August
14th, 1998).

The GPHF Minilab has been developed jointly by the German Health Fund (an
initiative of research-based manufacturers in Germany) professor Peter
Pachaly of Bonn University and the Medical Missionary Institute in Wurzburg.
It was developed over two years and has been tested in Ghana, Kenya,
Tanzania and the Philippines.

The minilab comes with two cases of labware and a start-up package of
reagents and solvents. 15 drugs will be covered initially, but more products
expected to be included soon.

GPHF-Minilab will be supplied to government authorities, professional bodies
and NGOs at USD 2 750, and training fees of USD 100 per capita per day.
