E-drug: Brain drain of pharmacists (cont'd)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi All,

It's becoming a problem in developing countries for pharmacists. In
my practice as a community pharmacist there are several reasons:

The community pharmacist is often under-utilised and his/her job is
always reduced to routine work. The pharmacist profession in
Uganda always attracts high calibre brains who find themselves
underutilised after School. The solution to this lies in the
strengthening of the regulations so that the issues relating to
dispensing doctors are minimised.

The pay in public sector needs to be increased to cope with the
private sector counterparts. If this is coupled with some soft long term
loans for necessities (car, house etc), then the problem will be solved.

Most pharmacists in Uganda have ended up doing postgraduate
programmes in Business Administration, Public Health and have
shunned masters in main stream pharmacy core subjects, simply
because after qualifying you earn the same as a graduate with one
degree. The pay structures need to be streamlined so as to attract
more specialisation in the field of pharmacy.
