Organization and implementation
Course structure
The course comprises academic and practical components and lasts six months.
For the academic component, students spend 2 full days a week at the
Mauritius Institute of Health where formal, taught activities are
held, usually from 830 am to 330 pm.
The academic component consists of a number of taught modules of
variable duration. These modules include the teaching of skills
specific to pharmacy store management to a large extent and to a
lesser extent, essential generic skills required for many healthcare
professions.
For the practical components, students spend their remaining time in
the store pharmacy where they learn the vocational and business
aspects of their job, applying the knowledge and skills learnt at the
institute to their work. This practical component is intended to
train the student store manager in all the vocational aspects of the
work so that he/she can respond effectively to the needs of the job.
This component of the traineeship is expected to provide more than
ample opportunity and time for learners to observe, learn, practise
and develop mastery in the majority of skills required for the job.
Students are expected to be based in one regional hospital for the
entire duration of the training, although they may be placed in other
hospitals for short periods to see and learn any special procedures
etc that may not be carried out at their normal work site, thus
ensuring that they enjoy a wide training base. It is expected that in
this respect, senior officers will provide all support necessary to
make the apprenticeship educationally sound and successful.
Progress is monitored by means of continuous assessments, academic
and practical and also by formal assessments, all of which contribute
towards the final course marks. Details of assessment are further
elaborated in the assessment section.
