A study was conducted in Nine Terai (Plains) districts of Nepal to
identify usual treatment practices for common problems. The study was
undertaken in randomly selected 900 households. About 65% of
households got treatment usually from private sector (drug retailers,
private practitioners and treatment from border town of india) for
diarrhoea both for under five and above five years of age. Traditional
treatment (including shamans) was still sought 25% of the time for
diarrhoea. The private sector utilisation of households was between
37-60% for cough, worm infestation, weakness and fever. The public
sector utilisation was between 23-40% only (highest utilisation was
for fever). Traditional treatment was still sought 42% time for cough,
16% for worm infestation, 35% for weakness, and 19% for fever for both
age groups. About 50% of households reported using cough medicines and
93% of them felt that cough medicines were useful. Similarly, 50% of
households reported using vitamins/tonics and 78% of them felt
vitamins/tonics were useful.
