So far as I know the main problem with zidovudine is that the raw
material is highly explosive, and that Wellcome had to build a special
robot-monitored manufacturing facility in the USA to make it. The high
price of zidovudine was mainly caused by this basic problem. For that
reason it will be nearly impossible to build a similar factory in a
developing country. I do not know whether this is true; Galxo-Wellcome
can tell you.
