E-DRUG: Counterfeit ARVs in Africa - Alert for Regulatories Authorities (2)

Whilst it is never too late to take appropriate action to protect public
health, the impression should not be given that "counterfeiting" is a new
phenomenon, or indeed that it is happening because of lapses in ARV
distribution strategy. This will only go to add to the irritating list of
stigma that surrounds the pandemic.
WHO and other partners, including NGOs
and Pharmaceutical Professional Associations, have been harping on this
menace for over three decades and yet we seem to have made little progress.
If anything, the current strong political will for supporting access to
ARVs where they are needed most, should only be used to do the necessary
which is, to strengthen National Drug Authorities.
