E-DRUG: counterfeit ARVs in DRC (2)

Counterfeit ARVs in the DRC is exactly the reason why I raised concern about
access to ARVs using CBOs, if it is not done within the regulatory framework
of a country. What has been reported from the DRC shows the importance and
the need of strong drug regulatory authorities in all African countries. A
strong authority would be in a position to bring anybody who breaks the law
to book. The authority, on the other hand, would not be effective in the
absence of a national drug policy.
What has happened in the DRC is going to be common if the WHO 3 x 5
strategy is just pushed blindly. We need to strengthen regional QUALITY
ASSURANCE LABORATORIES in Africa. What is need right away to take stock of
what is on the ground and the level of capacity. All countries need
guidelines for the development of measures to combat counterfeit drugs,
NOW!.
