E-Drug: Destruction of expired drugs (4)
----------------------------------------
Reading the three earlier messages on destruction of expired drugs the need
for "environmental safe"destruction methods is very obvious. In a number
of countries in the past "garbage pits", "burning in an open fire" or"
burning in small scale incinerators" were commonly used methods.
In general there seems to be need to assess the environmental impact or
risk of these "simple" methods and to look for possible safer methods of
destruction.
In Uganda the need to investigate possible safer alternatives has been
indentified . On request from the Ministry of Health and the National Drug
Authority, funded by the Uganda Essential Drug Support Programme / DANIDA
Health Sector Support Programme a team of Experts presently is carrying out
a detailed study to formulate recommendations to safely destroy expired
drugs/medical-surgical in the future. The construction of a "environmental "
safe incinerator is one of the options under consideration. The draft report
of this technical assessment is likely to be concluded in the nearby future
(End of May 1997).
The findings/recommendation from this study, when completed , hopefully will
be useful to others facing the same problem at present. When the study is
completed UEDSP will circulate a summary to interested parties through E-mail.
