E-drug: Effectiveness of Generics compared to brands (cont'd)
---------------------------------------------
Dear E-Druggers:
Atieno Ojoo's comment illustrates the difficulty of discussing the quality
of generics against brands in a "generic"way. As she points out, there have
been failures among branded products -- many involving the appearance
of toxicity only after marketing; and of course there are plenty of
poor quality generics -- some from firms with otherwise excellent
reputations, some from firms that shouldn't be allowed to sell
pizzas. Regulatory vigilance does enormous good to foster quality
drug manufacture, but human nature being as it is, those engaged in
procuring medicines should always know the name and reputation of
the manufacturer (not merely the distributor) of every drug we use,
irrespective of whether branded or generic. To pretend that all
brands or all generics are "good" or "suspect," "cheap" or
"expensive" is to oversimplify a complex question.
