E-drug: Essential Drugs list for Greece (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleague,
What you probably have in mind is a reimbursement list. As you will
understand
this is a highly politically charged item in the EU, and hotly contested
on legal
grounds. Some countries (UK, Germany) have "black" lists of drugs which
can
no longer be prescribed, others have "white" lists which is in principle
the same
as a formulary. It is useful to have two kinds of formularies: One for
hospitals
(including outpatient departments) and one for primary health care (=
general
practice). To keep the issue out of the political limelight I would advise
you to
consult the Pharmaceuticals Unit of WHO Europe in Copenhagen (Dr Kees de
Joncheere). They have a lot of experience in selecting "essential" drugs
for the
European area, and they have done so for most Eastern European countries,
the Balkan, Russia, some former Russian republics, and Malta.
Good luck.
