[e-drug] Ethics of research on healthcare in developing countries

E-drug: Ethics of research on healthcare in developing countries
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics published its Report "The ethics
of research related to healthcare in developing countries" on the
25th April.

Developing countries urgently need research to help relieve the
enormous burden of disease that they carry. It is vital that those in
wealthy countries, both in the public and private sector, help
sponsor this research. But rigorous ethical safeguards must be in
place to prevent the exploitation of those who take part in the
research. This Report defines the ethical standards for healthcare
research in developing countries. It will provide a framework for
anyone who is designing or conducting such research. The Report's
recommendations focus on standards of care, consent, ethical
review of research and what happens when the research is over.

The Report is available to download free of charge from our
website: www.nuffieldbioethics.org/developingcountries

Alternatively, a printed copy is available for GBP 3 (including
postage and packaging).

The conclusions and recommendations of the report are also
available in French and Spanish from the Council's website, or in
printed version. A CD-ROM containing the entire report, and the
French and Spanish translations, is also available free of charge.
