International Fellowships Program - Ford Foundation

The Ford Foundation expects to fund 350 master's and doctoral
students each year with what is being billed as the foundation's
largest
single grant - the new International Fellowships Program (IFP). The
IFP Fellowship will provide access to higher education to citizens of
countries that typically lack broad access to such opportunities.
In 2001, the program will begin by admitting citizens of Nigeria,
Senegal, Ghana, Vietnam, Chile, Peru, and Russia, but it will expand
to include many more countries in 2002. Fellows may study anywhere in
the world, including the United States, but must return to their home
country upon the conclusion of their fellowship to apply their newly
learned skills.
According to Joan Dassin, Director of the IFP Program, there are no
restrictions on what fellows may study, but the topic must be related
to a problem in their home country. Biomedical research is permitted,
but it is up to the fellow to justify how training in this discipline
would be of practical value to their homeland.

undergraduate initiative, which provides funds for institutions in
disadvantaged countries.
Eligibility: Individuals must have baccalaureate degrees and must be
citizens of eligible countries. Applicants must demonstrate
leadership ability and commitment to their communities.
Funds: The amount of individual stipends "will vary greatly depending
on where [fellows] study", a total of US$ 280 million will be spent
over the next ten years by the Foundation.
Deadline: Deadlines will vary depending on country of origin, but
common deadlines will be established soon.
