E-drug: Indicators for community pharmacies? (cont'd)
---------------------------------------------

Dear friends,

In 1994, the Australian government published a 'Manual of Indicators'
to monitor the implementation and effect of our National Policy on the
Quality Use of Medicines. At that time, the indicators had been
developed, but not been measured. In December 1999, a results
version of the indicators was published: "Report of the national
indicators evaluating the quality use of medicines component of
Australia's National Medicines Policy". The report includes results of
the measurement of the indicators in 1992 and 1998 and in effect
shows how far the implementation of the policy has progressed over
that time. For those of you who are interested in national level
indicators, copies of the report are available from:

With regards to community pharmacy indicators, a project was
conducted in Australia in 1992 "Development of Pharmacy Specific
Health Outcome Indicators", where indicators were developed but
problems were found with their implementation in practice. Since then
"Standards for the provision of pharmacist only and pharmacy
medicines in community pharmacy" have been developed, as have
"professional practice standards". Copies of the standards are
available from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. Their website
is http://www.psa.org.au and their e-mail address psa.nat@psa.org.au
