E-DRUG: Lesotho needs help (pharmacists)! (5)
--------------------------------------------
Have you considered partnering with an organisation such as Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)? I went via VSO to Ethiopia to teach medical and pharmacy students in a medical college in the north of the country. The volunteer must have at least 2 years experience but many of the VSO instructors at tertiary institutions across Ethiopia had Masters and PhDs. The local partner is expected to provide a counterpart colleague(s) to ensure sustainability, and housing. In return, the volunteer will stay for 1-2 years on an allowance of approximately USD100 a month, usually paid jointly by VSO and the national government. There is a VSO Programme Office in Johannesburg and VSO pharmacists are currently working in hospitals in the rural areas of South Africa. The VSO website is www.vso.org.uk.
There are other organisations that offer similar schemes (UN Volunteers, GDZ, GTZ, etc). Have you also considered looking for short-term instructors? Universities and hospitals in the UK are now much more open to giving their instructors/pharmacists longer vacation periods to enable them to get involved with projects abroad.
