The Medicines Transparency Alliance: Making a Difference to Peoples
Health

Time & date: 13.00-14.30 Wednesday 21 May 2008 (a light lunch will be
available)
The Medicines Transparency Alliance (MeTA) is a global alliance
involving governments, business and civil society leaders, initially
financed by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and
working in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and
the World Bank. This lunchtime meeting will be an opportunity to learn
more about MeTAs programme to improve transparency and accountability
in the pharmaceutical market, and increase access to essential
medicines. It is beginning a pilot phase in seven countries Ghana,
Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Peru, The Philippines, Uganda and Zambia.
It will also be an opportunity to learn more about the WHO programme
Good Governance for Medicines which currently operates in 27
countries, and is a complementary initiative, also seeking to increase
access to quality essential medicines, through better transparency and
accountability.
