Dear E-druggers,
We kindly would like to remind you of our request to complete the HAI survey on patient prices of insulin as described below:
Health Action International (HAI) invites you to participate in a global survey of patient prices of insulin. This survey is part of a project entitled Addressing the Challenge and Constraints of Insulin Sources and Supply ( 'ACCISS Study'). The project is co-led by Richard Laing (Boston University), David Beran (University of Geneva) and myself.
In this first year of the project we are mapping the global insulin market to determine which pharmaceutical companies manufacture insulin, formulations, prices, trade issues, tariffs, patents on insulin etc., as well as regulatory issues related to market authorisations for biosimilars.
Current initiatives to improve access to insulin will also be examined.
We have already started collecting government procurement prices of insulin and reimbursement prices. Now we want to collect patient prices.
Insulin comes in various forms and presentations (human/ analogue, vials/pens etc.) and at different prices. For this survey, we want to collect patient prices for insulin products, in the public sector and the private sector, in as many countries of the world as possible. This is where we need your help.
We would be very grateful if you could:
1. Go to your nearest public hospital and ask the full patient price for outpatients of each insulin product in stock. If insulin is provided free of charge then please still tell us what insulin was in stock as that is valuable information. If patients pay a part-charge (also called a co-payment) please ask for the full price.
We have developed a data collection form to help you to collect the data and a data entry tool.
You can access both on
http://www.haiweb.org/ACCISS.htm
The form and survey tool asks about your location, sector (public or private), the types of insulins found, brand/trade names, manufacturers, strengths, pack size, and full patient price.
2. Then go to the nearest private retail pharmacy and ask the patient price for each insulin they have in stock. Please enter this information in the same data entry tool.
3. To assess the affordability of insulin, please enter the daily wage of the lowest paid unskilled government worker in your country (in local currency) into the survey tool. We will then calculate how many days this person has to work to pay for 10ml of each insulin in the outlets.
This data, along with the other findings from our study, will be used to develop interventions to improve access to this important medicine.
Thank you in advance for completing this survey and contributing to our knowledge on global insulin prices. We would be grateful to receive submitted data by early July as we need to complete the analyses in July.
