[e-drug] Percentage waste due to expiry or damage?

E-DRUG Percentage waste due to expiry or damage?
---------------------------------------------

Hi,
I wanted to know which method is correct to measure the indicator, in
health commodity logistics performance measurement, "*Percentage of
stock wasted due to expiration or damage"*
*1. Total value of expired items in monetary terms / Total value of
opening stock plus value purchased in the reporting period
*2. Total Value of expired items / total value of items purchased items
in the reporting period

I am asking this because different documents has different approaches
and want to know which one is the more useful*

E-DRUG: Percentage waste due to expiry or damage? (2)
-------------------------------------------------

Dear Seyfu,
We calculate the percentage of expired medicines as follows:
1. Amount of expired medicines during the period
2. The amount (in 1) divided by annual average stock X 100%
3. Average stock during the period = [opening stock + stock end of the period] / 2
4. MSH reported

the range of acceptable value of annual expiry medicines is 3% to 5% of drug stocks
(MSH, 2012).

Yours sincerely
