Marius,
There is a wide spectrum of systems and experiences and there are some
examples of countries which have either built up there own systems or
use(d) existing standard packages, and/or tailored commercial packages
to their needs.
Within our National Essential Drugs Programs we work/have worked with
several organizations and companies which develop computerized drug
management systems. We have experience with the
following (list of systems and countries not exhaustive):
-hospital pharmacy / health corporation ICS; inventory control systems
developed by private companies (large offer of systems in USA) or
universities (Thailand is a good example)
-commercial software packages, tailored to their needs by local
computer companies or consultants (Bhutan, Sudan, Philippines)
-Swedis/ICS Inventory control system; developed by Pharmasoft,
Uppsala/Sweden (Cyprus, Gambia, Indonesia, Vietnam (not used) & many
countries in Europe)
-INVEC Inventory control system developed by MSH Management Sciences
for Health, USA (used in Mozambique, Malawi (suspended), Zimbabwe,
Yemen (implementation planned)
-GEMDIC Inventory control system developed by AEDES Brussels/Belgium
[used in Guinee, Mali (MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES-Belgium), Chad]
-Model Software on Inventory Control: specifically developed by
WHO/DMP for Morocco and in final test phase
