E-drug: Re: Need for..computerized drug management systems (contd)
----------------------------------------------------------
the WHO Essential Drugs programme has repeatedly been asked for assistance in
this area. Most of the systems we have experience with have already been
mentioned by Richard:
- Exact
- Gemdic
- Invec
- Navision
- SAP (suitable for/mainly used by larger private companies)
- Pharmasoft's Swedis (main focus now on developed countries)
- WHO SIAMED (test module for inventory control in Morocco only)
Since there are mixed experiences with most of the above-mentioned systems, we
felt the need for a systematic review and asked the EHG group in Copenhagen for
a publication that shall provide guidance to users and managers of medical
supply stores.
The publication shall provide helpful information on the following:
- requirements for computerized supply management and inventory control
(efficient and effective business process; on this topic, there is already an
excellent manual available: Managing Drug Supply: The selection, procurement
distribution and use of pharmaceuticals; Management Sciences for Health &
WHO/DAP; 2nd edition, 1997; Kumarian Press; USA)
- criteria for selection of an appropriate system (required features and
functions of system, requirements for maintenance and operations, total cost of
ownership)
- analysis of existing systems: identification of suitable systems (based on
the selection criteria developed by the study) and software companies which you
can contact.
We hope to complete the study by December 1998.
