E-drug: destruction of drugs (4)
----------------------------
Dear E-Druggers,
Today 800 tons of expired drugs need to de disposed of in Bosnia and
Herzegovina and there are neither high temperature incinerators nor
specialist chemical waste treatment centres. A set of guidelines for
alternative disposal methods was produced by WHO/EURO European Centre
for Environment and Health with the support of the WHO/EURO Programme
for Pharmaceuticals. The document is in the process of being
officially adopted in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has
been used to dispose of 200 tons of expired drugs in Mostar. The
drugs have been sorted, repackaged and concreted into drums and then
placed into a landfill site.
WHO/EURO, European Centre for Environment and Health and the Programme
for Pharmaceuticals, DAP WHO/HQ are now working to convert the
Guidelines for Disposal of Pharmaceuticals in Bosnia and Herzegovina
into an internationally recognised set of recommendations for
countries that do not have high temperature incineration facilities.
Once published, we will make these Guidelines available to E-druggers.
