E-drug: Re: Essential Drug Successes
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Richard Laing's program to document essential drug successes is an admirable
undertaking.
Surely, a leading success, if not the leading one, is the group of oral
rehydration solutions. They represent a phenomenal therapeutic advance,
having
what must be the highest ratio of effectiveness to simplicity of any
medicine
there is. It is also exhibit A of the myopia of the Nobel Committee that
they
never recognized the discovery of the inhibition by glucose of the
hypersecretory effects of the enterotoxins of the various E. coli strains
and
of C. vibrio.
