E-drug: Re: Iatrogenic HIV in Africa
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a response to our colleagues from the SIGN discussion forum, one
suggestion would be to publish their findings, since there are a lot of work
describing the socio-economic and cultural context which determine and
contribute to the spread of HIV infection, and not so many on the iatrogenic
HIV.
For example this week, The Lancet is starting a series of article addressing
the issues of AIDS in Africa, and in the first paper (Buv A, et al. The
spread and effect of HIV-1 infection in sub-Saharan Africa; Lancet 2002;
359: 2011-17 - free access to the paper at
http://www.thelancet.com/journal), apart from HIV-1 transmission per sex act
there is no mention of the iatrogenic route of transmission.
And yet everybody is supposed to know that a good and thorough understanding
and analysis of the epidemiological picture is the only way of designing
relevant intervention programmes.
