E-DRUG: Regulatory status of chloroform in liquid formulations (2)
--------------------------------------------------------
Hallo Lokesh,
In Martindale 'The Complete Drug Reference' 34th ED. you find the following statement concerning chloroform: 'BP 2003 states that chloroform may be used in the UK as a flavouring agent and preservative in a concentration of 0.5% and less in medicinal products and cosmetics' and continues: 'but doubts have been cast on the safety of long-term use of chloroform in mixtures. In the USA FDA banned the use of chloroform in medicines and cosmetics, because of reported carcinogenicity in animals; it has also been withdrawn from systemic use in other countries.'
BP is using chloroform as a preservative in oral liquids usually in the concentration of 0.25%.
