[e-drug] RFI: Antimicrobial consumption measures (cont)

E-drug: RFI: Antimicrobial consumption measures (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Regarding ways to quantify antimicrobial consumption, for a recent project
we looked at ceftriaxone and cefotaxime consumption in 50 hospitals. We
quantified use in several ways.

For numerators we used: numbers of courses, grams and DDDs.

For denominators we used: number of patient admissions (inpatients,
outpatients and day patients), (or patient separations from hospital
(discharges and deaths)) and patient bed days.

We also classified use as being for prophylaxis, empirical or directed
(known organism) therapy. As well we classified use for medical and surgical
patients.
