E-drug: Siting policies for retail/community pharmacies (cont'd)
---------------------------------------------
I found some valuable information on Madagascar in a technical
report prepared for the European Community Committee in
December 1995. As far as I know no new legislation has
appeared meanwhile in Madagascar.
The total number of pharmacies in the free sector is approx 210.
The exact number is unknown. All these professionals are
trained abroad. Only 10 are employed by the Ministry of Health.
With the help of the Swiss cooperation, the MOH created a lot
of rural pharmacies (pharmacies communautaires) based on
cost recovery and a yearly contribution pro family.
Pharmaceuticals are purchased abroad, merely at IDA, The
Netherlands. The European Community supported recently the
creation of a central independent pharmaceutical purchase
institute which supplies all public sector health institutions on a
cost recovery base, which is also institutionalized recently.
There is only scarce information on the health sector, but if you
are interested to go more into details I have to meet more
specialized people.
