[e-drug] Social media submission to Australian TGA Transparency Review

E-DRUG: Social media submission to Australian TGA Transparency Review
-----------------------------------------------------------

Dear colleagues,

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is currently
undergoing a Transparency Review, see:

http://www.tga.gov.au/consult/tga-transparency-review.htm

The purpose is to improve public knowledge of regulatory decision-making and
to enhance public understanding of the benefits and risks of therapeutic
goods.

Accordingly, you may be interested following "social media" submission to
the Transparency Review prepared by the organisers of the Melbourne 10:23
campaign

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvgRMcfo0Yk

The video draws attention to concern that the TGA does not adequately inform
consumers (and health professionals) of the different regulatory standards
that apply to so-called "lower-risk" therapeutic goods such as Homeopathic
and Listed medicines compared to Registered medicines.

In particular, the TGA does not inform consumers (and health professionals)
that they do not routinely assess so-called "lower-risk" therapeutic goods
for efficacy.

The aim is to support calls from CHOICE (the Australian Consumers
Association) and others that, in the interests of transparency, all
so-called "lower-risk" therapeutic goods should be required to have the
following prominent statement on their label and all promotional material,
"This product has not been assessed for efficacy by Australian health
authorities".

The Melbourne 10:23 campaign was part of a global campaign to educate the
public about homeopathy, see:

Enjoy!

Cheers
Ken
