E-DRUG: Terizidone

E-drug: Terizidone
---------------------------------------------

Terizidone is an old drug (introduced in 1968) originally produced by a
German manufacturer, but apparently no longer marketed in Germany
(it disappeared from the Rote Liste and Arznei-Telegramm). In Europe
it is marketed in Italy and Austria only. It is very briefly mentioned
in Martindale, but NOT in the Merck Index. The international literature
about it abruptly stops in 1974; there is one Italian case history in
1994, and a warning in a German journal in 1997 not to use it in AIDS
patients. It is widely marketed in the East (Taiwan, Korea) by local
Merck branches, and it is still being manufactured and marketed in
South Africa (hospital only). I would avoid such drugs and ask for
firm evidence of efficacy. As it is, it might do more harm than good. It
probably belongs in the dust bin.
