E-drug: Vacancies in the Northern Province Pharmaceutical Services

The Department of Health and Welfare has the following two
vacancies. These two posts are critical for the delivery of an effective,
cost efficient and accessible pharmaceutical service in the Province.

Post 1:
Chief Pharmacist: Logistics, Warehousing and Repacking

Salary Range
R 117 234 - 127 332 per annum

Requirements
a) Registration with South African Pharmacy Council as a Pharmacist
and at least five years post registration experience in procurement and
distribution.
b) Valid drivers license
c) Sound knowledge of the State tendering system with regards to
medicines and disposable surgical sundries.
d) Experience in quantification of estimates, computer literate with
experience in MS Word and Excel.
e) Knowledge of Treasury regulations will be a recommendation.

Duties:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
a) Monitor the application of NTP 622, a management contract for
warehousing and distribution.
b) Ensure that the provincial pharmaceutical database is correct and
updated.
c) Verify that payments made on NTP 622 are substantiated with
relevant documentation and correct
d) Compile monthly hospital accounts comparative to budget.
e) Compile and submit estimates for COMED supported tenders.
f) Ensure that offers received for tenders meet the published
specifications.
g) Attend recommendation meetings for relevant tenders at the Office
of the State Tender Board.
h) Obtain quotes for items not available on tender.
i) Oversee the functions of the repacking Unit.
j) Determine stock levels according to Provincial policy.
k) Compile statistics on medicine related issues as requested by the
Deputy Director: Pharmaceutical Services.
l) Attend meetings on behalf of the Deputy Director: Pharmaceutical
Services when requested.
m) Responsible for vaccine co-ordination and cold chain management
in the Province.

Post 2
Chief Pharmacist - Professional Services

Salary Range
R 117234 - 127 332 per annum

Requirements
a) Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council and at least
five years post registration experience.
b) Valid drivers license.
c) A post-graduate degree, diploma or experience in one of the
following fields will be a recommendation - Clinical pharmacology,
Pharmacoeconomics, Public Health Administration and MBA.

Duties
This post is a dual appointment between the Department of Health
and Welfare, Northern Province and Medunsa School of Pharmacy.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

Under Medunsa School of Pharmacy-
a) Assist in the development of training material, e.g. Effective
prescribing for Doctors, Pharmacy management in the Public Sector,
Pharmacy assistant training, etc.
b) Give lectures to Pharmacist Intern Tutors, train interns on certain
modules, train pharmacy assistants on certain modules and give
lectures to undergraduate students when necessary.
c) Assist the Principal Pharmacist: Training to co-ordinate and plan
pharmaceutical related training.

Responsibilities under the Department of Health and Welfare.
a) Establish and run the Pharmaceutical Resource Center that will
provide drug information to hospitals, monitor drug usage patterns in
the Province and analyze statistical information received from
hospitals.
b) Monitor compliance to the Essential Drug List and Standard
Treatment Guidelines in the Northern Province.
c) Perform cost benefit evaluation for drugs and treatments outside
the Provincial Code List and protocols, and supply this information to
the Provincial Therapeutics Committee.
d) Perform management duties for the Provincial Therapeutics
Committee.
e) Assist in establishing hospital and district therapeutics committees
where needed.
f) Attend meetings on behalf of the Deputy Director: Pharmaceutical
Services when requested.
