E-DRUG WHO/EDM Technical Briefing Seminar, Nov 99.

I am pleased to announce the second Technical Briefing Seminar, organized by
the
WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Other Medicines in November 1999. This
seminar is intended for technical advisers and field staff of international,
governmental and non-governmental organizations active in pharmaceutical and
health sector reform programmes in developing countries. Detailed
information is
given below.

*WHO Technical briefing seminar for international staff active in
pharmaceutical
support programmes

Organized by: WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Other Medicines
(WHO/EDM),
in collaboration with UNICEF Supply Division, Copenhagen
Venue: WHO Headquarters, Geneva
Dates: 8-12 November 1999

**Target audience:
Technical advisers and field staff of WHO, UNICEF, other UN, governmental
and
non-governmental organizations active in pharmaceutical and health sector
reform
programmes in developing countries.

**General objective of the seminar:
By the end of the programme, participants will
1. have a general understanding of the most common problems in the
pharmaceutical sector in developing countries;
2. have a general understanding of the way the WHO and UNICEF Supply
Division
support developing countries in strengthening the pharmaceutical sector;
3. appreciate the importance of national drug policies as the best approach
to
make essential drugs of good quality available to all who need them, and
ensure
the rational use of drugs;
4. be aware of ways and means to strengthen collaboration with WHO and
other
organizations supporting the pharmaceutical sector in developing countries

**Subjects and themes:
Problem analysis, drug financing, pharmaceuticals and health care reform,
improving drug procurement and supply, vaccines supply systems, public
education, building capacity in drug quality assurance, promoting rational
drug
use, the role of a national drug policy, pharmaceuticals and the private
sector,
and how to strengthen international collaboration between agencies.

**Resource persons:
Presentations and group activities will be lead by senior staff members of
the
WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Other Medicines, as well as staff of
UNICEF and other WHO clusters and departments. Optional sessions and
individual
appointments with WHO staff are possible.

**Applications and admission
Admission to the briefing seminar is free of charge. Participants are
expected
to fund their own travel, accommodation, meals and incidentals, and to
attend
full-time. Applications will be limited to a maximum of 35. Preference will
be
given to those with direct involvement in technical development programmes
in
the pharmaceutical sector in developing countries. In line with WHO's policy
on
gender parity at least 50% of accepted participants will be women. After
provisional registration,
acceptance to the seminar will be confirmed not later than 1 October 1999.
