Dear e-druggers,

The WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy, in
collaboration with the UNICEF Supply Division, is holding its annual
Technical Briefing Seminar for International Staff Active in
Pharmaceutical Support Programmes from 12-16 November in the
WHO Headquarters in Geneva. More details on target audience,
objectives and an outline of the programme are given below.

As usual, participation at the seminar is free of charge but
participants have to arrange for their own transport, board and
lodging. In case of oversubscription, preference will be given to
staff members of WHO, UN organisations, national governments,
non-governmental organisations and training institutions.

WHO Technical briefing seminar for international staff active in
pharmaceutical support programmes

Organized by WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines
Policy in collaboration with UNICEF Supply Division, Copenhagen

Venue: WHO Headquarters, Geneva, Salle G (8th floor)
Dates: 12-16 November 2001

Target audience
Technical advisers and field staff of WHO, UNICEF, other UN and
bilateral agencies and non-governmental organizations, active in
pharmaceutical and health sector support programmes in developing
countries.

Meeting objectives
By the end of the programme participants will:
1. have a general understanding of the most common problems in
    the pharmaceutical sector in developing countries;
2. have a general understanding of how WHO and the UNICEF
    Supply Division support developing countries in strengthening
    the pharmaceutical sector;
3. appreciate the importance of national drug policies as the best
    approach to make essential drugs of good quality available to all
    who need them, and ensure the rational use of drugs;
4. be aware of ways to strengthen collaboration with WHO and
    other organizations supporting the pharmaceutical sector in
    developing countries.

Outline of the programme
Sessions will be devoted to developing national drug policies,
selection of essential drugs, access to essential drugs including
affordability and financing, the impact of globalisation and trade
agreements, drug regulation and quality assurance, drug
procurement and supply systems, promoting rational drug use, and
coordination between international agencies.

Structure of sessions
1. Presentation of main problems at country level, key approaches/
    strategies, practical aspects of assistance to Member States, and
    key documents
2. Small group discussion on the basis of 3-4 discussion points
3. Presentation by 2 groups (randomly selected) of outcome of their
    discussion

Resource persons
Sessions will be lead by senior staff members of the WHO
Department of Essential Drugs and Medicines Policy. There will also
be some sessions by staff of UNICEF and other WHO clusters and
departments. One afternoon has been reserved for optional sessions
and two afternoons are available for individual appointments with
WHO staff.
