WHO/EDM Technical briefing seminar for international staff active in
pharmaceutical support programmes
Organized by: WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Other Medicines
(WHO/EDM), in collaboration with UNICEF Supply Division, Copenhagen
Venue: WHO Headquarters, Geneva, Salle G (8th floor)
Dates: 8-12 November 1999
Target audience:
Technical advisers and field staff of WHO, UNICEF, other UN and
bilateral agencies and non-governmental organizations active in
pharmaceutical and health sector reform programmes in developing
countries.
General objective of the meeting:
By the end of the programme, participants will
1. have a general understanding of the most common problems in the
pharmaceutical sector in developing countries;
2. have a general understanding of the way the WHO and UNICEF Supply
Division support developing countries in strengthening the
pharmaceutical sector;
3. appreciate the importance of national drug policies as the best
approach to make essential drugs of good quality available to all who
need them, and ensure the rational use of drugs;
4. be aware of ways and means to strengthen collaboration with WHO
and other organizations supporting the pharmaceutical sector in
developing countries
General set-up of sessions
1. Presentation (20-30 minutes) of summary of main problems at
country level, main approaches/strategies, practical aspects of
assistance to member states, presentation of key documents in this
area
2. 30 minutes of small group discussion on the basis of 3-4
discussion points
3. Presentation by 2 groups (randomly selected) of outcome of their
discussion
Resource persons
Most presentations and discussions will be lead by senior staff
members of the WHO Department of Essential Drugs and Other Medicines.
There will also be sessions by staff of UNICEF and other WHO clusters
and departments. Time has been reserved for optional sessions and for
individual appointments with WHO staff .
Applications and admission
Admission to the briefing seminar is free of charge. Participants are
expected to arrange for their own travel, accommodation, meals and
incidentals, and to attend full-time. Applications will be limited to
a maximum of 35. Preference will be given to those with direct
involvement in technical development programmes in the pharmaceutical
sector in developing countries. In line with WHO's policy on gender
parity at least 50% of accepted participants will be women.
