E-drug: Wholesale and retail markups on essential drugs in
developing countries (cont)
---------------------------------------------
The situation in Canada varies from province to province since under our
constitution health is a provincial matter. In Ontario, for the provincial
drug plan, the province has the right to set the markup to pharmacists at
what ever level it wants. Similarly, in the public plan the province can
unilaterally set the dispensing fee. In the private market the pharmacists
are free to set their own dispensing fee. I'm not sure about the level of
markups in the private sector in Ontario and I don't know what happens in
other provinces. You could try getting in touch with one of two companies in
Ottawa who I believe would have that type of information:
Palmer D'Angelo: <www.pdci.on.ca>
Brogan Inc: <www.broganinc.com>
I hope that this is of some help.
