Interdisciplinary programming tools

Dear Geeta,

A few suggestions in response to your query of 23 Nov.

Towards Healthy Alliances a manual for evaluating joint working, par-
ticularly including community organisations 1995, by Funnell, Old-
field & Speller. Published by the Health Education Authority, Trevelyan
House, 30 Gt Peter St, London SW1P 2HW, or from Marston Book Services,
PO Box 269, Abingdon Oxon OX14 4YN , fax 01235 465555.

The book Management and Organisation of Developing Health Systems, 1994
by Collins CD, Oxford Medical Publications, has a chapter on intersec-
toral coordination with useful checklists for planning.

Article: Joint working & the production of a City Health Plan: the Liv-
erpool experience, 1997, Costongs & Springett, Health Promotion Inter-
national vol 12 no1, pp 9-19 is a very interesting discussion of the
process of different groups working together.

Documents from the WHO Healthy Cities initiative might be relevant
many projects have been set up all round the world.

Also, rapid appraisal methods are suitable for setting up joint proj-
ects for identifying needs and setting joint objectives. I would
imagine CIDA has materials on RRA or PRA.

My interest:

I am working on a proposal to design an intersectoral programme to
tackle TB in South Africa, particularly to include the education sec-
tor.

I should be very interested to hear from anyone with experience of such
a programme or suggestions of models of intersectoral action that would
be appropriate.

Best wishes

Nicola
