Dear Colleague,
Jhpiego and the World Health Organization (WHO) are pleased to announce an upcoming Male Circumcision (MC) Skills Course, to be held in Lusaka, Zambia from June 9 to June 20, 2008. The application deadline is May 9, 2008; please read on for more details, and please forward this e-mail to any interested parties.
This two-week training is an intensive, hands-on course that will prepare teams of providers and trainers to implement MC programs aimed at reducing the transmission of HIV in high-prevalence countries. At the end of this program, your team will be prepared to:
* Perform MC under local anesthesia using the Dorsal Slit technique;
* Provide individual preoperative and postoperative counseling to clients;
* Provide preoperative assessment and postoperative care to prevent and manage potential complications;
* Monitor the quality of MC services;
* Provide group education promoting MC as an HIV prevention and male reproductive health intervention;
* Advocate for MC as an effective means of reducing HIV transmission and promoting male reproductive health.
Applications are encouraged from country teams that include clinicians (physicians and non-physicians licensed to practice surgery in home country) and other staff including clinical officers, nurses and counselors who work together as a team. Ideally, each country team should be comprised of providers whose skills include basic surgery, counseling and training.
To maximize learning and skills development, the number of participants in this course will be limited to 16. The course will be conducted by experienced MC providers and trainers who have facilitated MC training courses and implemented MC services in the region. The training will be conducted in English.
Scholarships:
WHO will provide scholarships to those selected to participate in the program. The scholarship will cover: all training costs; visa costs; lodging; all meals; travel to, from and within Zambia. Scholarships will be disbursed by Jhpiego, with priority given to participants from countries whose governments have indicated interest in scaling up quality MC services, and who can demonstrate:
* Ability and willingness to use the skills acquired to set up MC services in home countries upon return;
* Interest in becoming MC trainers.
To Apply:
Interested applicants should send an updated CV (in English) as well as a letter of motivation explaining why you wish to attend the course and how you intend to utilize the skills acquired. Send by May 9 to Chris Merriam at cmerriam@jhpiego.net.
Earlier-received applications will be given higher priority, once selection criteria are met. If applying as a country team, please submit, along with the CVs and motivation letters, a team nomination letter from the Ministry of Health, clearly identifying all proposed team members and the roles each will be expected to play in scaling up MC services.
