RFI: Lymphatic filariasis (2)
-----------------------------
Dear AFRO-NETS,
I refer to the concerned aunt worried about her nephew of 13 years liv-
ing in Canada and who has LF <Gerard@americas.dcmdi.dla.mil>
I am not an expert but I am in the field of parasitology. There is a
cure, but it may take time. The manufacturer of the more recent drug
"IVERMECTIN" is MERCK & Co Pharmaceuticals. Contact a representative in
Canada. They are known in practically all developed countries and some
that are developing, where filariasis and onchocerciasis are prevalent.
The old treatment was with Diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) over 12
days and needs careful administration. The WHO is another contact:

Fax: +41-22-791-4854
refer to "TDR News" No.49 March 1996, in which they describe admini-
stration - published by UNDP/WORLD BANK/WHO Special Programme for Re-
search and Training in Tropical Diseases.
Hope this helps.
