E-DRUG: Drug regulation in Somalia
----------------------------------
We are a group of Somali Physicians trying to establish a system to
regulate food and drug use in Somalia - a country without central
government. It has been a difficult task, so we would like to seek
assistance and advise from all. The questions we have are:
1. How can we control the drug import and drug use in a country
without central government? and
2. What is the position of International Organizations, NGO, and Drug
Industry?
Thank you for your help.

[Note from Co-moderator: These are tough questions to answer but perhaps
not new for those in the field. May be folks in WHO in Geneva will be
able to advise Dr. Mohamed.
Incidentally, Dr. Shoo of WHO Somalia (Email:rshoo@whosomalia.org)
posted a notice in E-DRUG about an EEC-funded vacancy for a clinical
pharmacologist in Somalia in February 1997. And also, Dr. Stephen
Lonsdale (Email:lsteve@globalnet.co.uk) who mentioned in an October 1998
posting in E-DRUG that he has served as a consultant in Somalia to look
at essential drug lists. For details of their messages, please visit the
e-drug website (http://www.healthnet.org/programs/edrug.html) and search
in the archives. Dr. Mohamed could you please summarize the responses
that you receive following this posting in E-DRUG after a week or so?
Many thanks. All the best in your efforts! Syed Rizwanuddin Ahmad]
