E-DRUG: Drug Use Activities in NEPAL

We are pleased to present below the following findings of training/
workshop on proper use of drugs for journalists and medicine awareness
training (MAT) for school teachers in Nepal:

1.Subject: Journalists Trained On Proper Use of Medicines in Nepal.
           Kumud K.Kafle, Bimal M.Shrestha, Gajendra B.Bhuju,Baburam
           Humangai, Gorkha B,Dangaechhetri,Shiv B.Karkee

Fifteen Journalists of various newspaper were trained on Proper Use
of Medicine in May 1995. A short lecture, demonstration and
discussion were used as training methodology.
Trainees were followed-up upto one year to assess their knowledge and
practice. A significant increase in correct knowledge of
vitamins/tonics, expired medicines, pharmaceutical legislation,
banned drugs, essential drugs, quality of medicine and drugs of
addiction was found. There was also significant change in correct
knowledge of 'conditions for not using medicines'.
The knowledge of precaution in using medicine was practised on
children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Similarly, advice on
antibiotics was also practised. They also practised knowledge for
collecting and editing news as well as writing an acticle.
  
2.Subject: Medicine Awareness Training (MAT) for School Teachers in
           Nepal.

           Humangain, Gorkha B.Dangechhetri, Shiv B.Karkee
            
A Medicine Awareness Training (MAT) for School Teachers was
organised for lower secondary and secondary level school teachers in
May 1995. The training method included short lecture, demonstartion
and discussions. The trainees were followed upto one year to assess
their knowledge and practises. A significant increase in correct
knowledge of antibiotics, DPT,BCG and Measles vaccined, correct
knowledge in buying intravenous fluids, use of cough medicines and
vitamins/tonics was found. There was also change in correct knowledge
of conditions for not using medicines.The knowledge of precaution in
using medicne was practised on children,pregnant women, and lactating
mothers. Advice on antibiotics was also found to be practised.
