E-DRUG: E-drug: Donations, temporary moderation.

I attach a copy of a letter which I have sent to Time magazine. They will
probably not publish it but I thought we should publicise the new WHO
Guidelines.

Richard Laing

I refer to your excellent article of April 29th about drug donations.

This is a widespread problem affecting most developing countries. In Eritrea
recently, I saw stacks of boxes of Naprosyn by Syntex in the medical store.
The problem was that the drug was not on the essential drug list for the
country and was packed in bottles of TWO tablets!

The publication by WHO of their Guidelines for Drug Donations (WHO/DAP/96.2)
after consultation with UN and non governmental relief agencies is welcome.
All donors and recipient countries should abide by these guidelines.
