E-drug: Effectiveness of Generics compared to brands (cont'd)
---------------------------------------------
[The WHO site provides a number of definitions of generic drugs.
Here are a few.
A chemically equivalent copy designed from a brand-name drug whose
patent has expired. Typically less expensive and sold under the
common name for the drug, not the brand name.
A drug marketed under its biochemical name rather than under a trade
brand name. A generic drug differs from its brand-name counterpart in
the composition of its inert components, and is typically less
expensive than its brand-name equivalent.
A chemically equivalent copy of a brand-name drug whose patent has
expired. Also known as "generic equivalents."
A drug which is manufactured by a company that is not the innovator.
Generic drugs are chemically equivalent, and have been approved by
the FDA. Most generic drug names reflect the chemical name of the
drug. BS]
Dear e- druggers
As you too have been getting different views on generic vs branded
issue. in e-druggers ( or other sources ).
The subject is debated in and around.
(1) Generic concept is interpreted in terms of economical /
technological front.
(2) Generic is taken as an alternative to 'branded'. Or as a second option.
(3) Generic is projected as a 'rival' / threat to brand.
Where we don't touch the basic principle of generic it is an
important ingredient in the society for professional health
management. Birth of the generic is a 'policy matter' in our social
structure, which serves wider issues then three points illustrated as
above.
Generic gives principals to streamline the manufacturing. A step to
protect the society from brand exploitation. Or to stop 'brand to
brand' fight.
Generic protect the rights of the consumer. With greater
transparency. (Society still expect to see; with full transparency) .
Protect the rights of professionals and helps to concentrate on their
respected subjects rather becoming a 'puppet' in the brand building
game.
The generic is not 'eating' the share of branded market, but is
'removing' the unethical practices of the brand building 'Projects'.
The usage of generic products is not about bringing cost cutting on
purchase of products or a 'compromise' on the quality of the product.
(More or less highlighting the three issues as discussed in the
opening)
